When you need a fishing jar vs an intensifier.
Jars hit. Intensifiers tune the hit. Mixing them without a plan wastes a trip.
A fishing jar stores energy and releases it as an impact to free stuck pipe or a fish. An intensifier sits in the BHA to increase or control that impact — useful when pipe stretch or fluid damping softens the jar blow.
Choose a jar when you need an impact tool. Add an intensifier when modelling or field experience says the raw jar hit will not be enough.
| Question | Jar | Intensifier |
|---|---|---|
| Primary job | Deliver impact | Amplify / tune impact |
| Run alone? | Often yes | With a jar, not instead of one |
| Spec drivers | Pipe size, overpull, temp | Jar match, pipe, desired blow |
| Wrong choice looks like | No movement on fish | Over-stress or wasted BHA complexity |

FAQ
Do I always need an intensifier?
No. Many fishing BHAs run a jar alone. Add an intensifier when you need to shape or amplify the impact.
Hydraulic or mechanical jar?
Depends on temperature, fluid, and operational preference. Tell us the well envelope when you quote.
